Mythology is all the rage right now thanks to Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians, The Heroes of Olympus, and his Kane Chronicles series. This has opened up a whole new world of storytelling—new interpretations of famous myths, myths set in contemporary settings, the possibilities are endless. Meg Cabot’s new book, Abandon, is a fascinating new take on the myth of Persephone. It’s about a girl named Pierce who is trying to recover from an accident. She is starting at a new school and a new town and is somewhat alone, but she always feels as though someone is watching her. Because someone is. Even in this new town, John has found her. And he’s not exactly her guardian angel even though he shows up when she needs him most. She saw him after her accident, before she came back to life—and now he wants her back. But if she’s not careful, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.

When I started thinking about this post, the last thing I thought I would be relating Abandon to was a Rick Riordan series. But when you look at it, why wouldn’t a teen reader who has burned through all of Riordan’s books and is ready for a new challenge not like Abandon? Abandon has the new take on a mythological story but with a cool, dark paranormal side, it has great characters, and it has awesome plot twists as well as msytery. There’s also a hint of romance—that brooding bad boy John is mysterious and the kind of character that readers who like romance will love. This may exclude some Riordan fans, but hey, Percy and Annabeth had a little thing going. Our Teen Readers’ Club is a huge fan of Meg Cabot and we’re really excited to have Abandon (as well as Meg’s Airhead trilogy) on September’s TeenRC. But enough from me, let’s hear more about Abandon from Meg herself:
